What do PMHNP’s Do?

PMHNP has the ability to assess and diagnose patients, provide psychotherapy and provide medication management to patients with a variety of mental health disorders.

PMHNPs treat patients with diagnosed mental health disorders. PMHNPs duties include: assessing and diagnosing mental health disorders like depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, ADHD, substance abuse, dementia and much more.

PMHNPs first must make a diagnosis based on history of present illness, past psychiatric history, medical history, objective data, collateral, physical exam, diagnostic tests, and other sources. Once a diagnosis is made, the PMHNP develops and manages a treatment plan that may include prescribing medication and therapeutic services. Along with being trained in medication management, they are trained to provide psychotherapy for patients that include different modalities such as: Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, etc.
